multiple FreezePanes

I need to set two FreezePanes statements. I need the first three rows frozen so I write ws.View.FreezePanes(4, 8);. But I also need just the first column frozen with an unknown amount of rows (I'm using r) so I write ws.View.FreezePanes(r, 2);.

When I use either or, they work correctly. However, when I use both statements together, whichever is the last one seems to 'override' the other. So if I write:

ws.View.FreezePanes(4, 8);
ws.View.FreezePanes(r, 2);

my spreadsheet results in the first column being frozen, yet I cannot even scroll up and down through the rows.

If I write:

ws.View.FreezePanes(r, 2);
ws.View.FreezePanes(4, 8);

my spreadsheet results in the top three rows being frozen, but when I scroll right to left, the first column is not frozen.

How can I set multiple FreezePanes?

ws.View.FreezePanes(4, 2) will freeze top 3 rows and 1st column.
