ExcelPackage file size limit?

I have written a web application that reads a database, creates an ExcelPackage in memory, and downloads the XLSX file to the client PC. This works great for small data sets and big data sets (up to about 1500 rows * 160 columns). But if the data set increases any larger (2000 rows) EXCEL can not open the file. When I save the file on my PC and try to open it in EXCEL 2007, an error is displayed saying:

Excel cannot open the file 'XXX.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

Does anyone have any ideas why this works for "smaller" data sets but not larger data sets?

I opened my excel file using notepad and a System.ApplicationException was embedded in the file. I searched for that exception and it led me
here for the solution.
